About ASA filament

Acrylonitrile styrene acrylate (ASA) is an engineering thermoplastic that has been specially manufactured for outdoor purposes. The materials’ great chemical resistance and strong UV light resistance is the reason why objects created with ASA material maintain their original appearance so well. The filament material can handle extreme temperatures and is therefore highly durable in the long term. ABS filament is the predecessor of ASA filament and shares similar properties, often being a great alternative for one another. Some of the things that ASA filament material is used for are basic housing parts, street signage, and sports equipment.

Print with ASA filament

ASA filament has set configurations required to perform successful 3D prints, so be sure to always follow the instructions provided by the filament’s manufacturer. During the printing process, ensure to use a 3D printer with an enclosure to trap heat and print in a room that does not have any drafts or fluctuating temperature changes. The material will tend to cool down at a fast rate during the 3D print and it is therefore advised to print ASA filament with the part cooling fan turned off to avoid any warping and curling. Once an ASA filament part has been printed out and properly cooled, it will no longer be easily affected by extreme temperatures, providing a very sturdy and strong 3D part. For proper layer adhesion with ASA filament, use Kapton tape or 3DLAC spray. A great starting ASA filament to print with is our own reliable RepRap Filament, which provides consistent and good-looking 3D prints.

Post-processing ASA filament

ASA filament is a material that can easily be post-processed. There are multiple possibilities to change the finished look of ASA filament. One of the things you can do is use acetone to smooth or glue the printed ASA parts. Another option is to sand down parts with sandpaper to transform textures, allowing a smooth finish.
